Apportionment of Cases Investigated by Judge Juan Guzman

On October 14 the Supreme Court determined that Special Judge Juan Guzman, responsible for the investigation of the cases that stem from the criminal complaint filed against former general Augusto Pinochet (Rol 2182-98). Since the filing of the first case four years ago, he was jointly investigating such a great number of cases involving different crimes against the same defendant that each case was archived in a notebook the Judge called "episodes," totaling 99 "episodes." Considering the extreme serious nature of the cases contained in each "episode" and the fact that none had passed the investigation stage, the High Court decided to transfer most of them to other judges.

Judge Daniel Calvo Flores of the Santiago Court of Appeals was appointed as a judge exclusively designated to devote himself to the investigation of the facts identied and grouped in "episode" 66 of case Rol 2182-98. The cases under Judge Calvo are as follows: Lago Ranco, Tocopilla, Pisagua, Arica Conscripts, Alonso Lazo, Arnoldo Camus, Adriana Borquez, Bautista van Schouwen, Bernardo Lejderman, Curico, Coronel, Carlos Cuevas, Elsa Rudolphy Roman, Etienne Pesle, Enzo Munoz, Flora Espinoza, Fernando Reveco, Gabriel Marfull, Guillermo Vargas, Gerardo Garcia, Hernan Enriquez, Hugo Riveros, Isidro Carrillo, Jose Oyarzun, Armando Jimenez, Juan Soto, Guillermo Jorquera, Jose Leiva, Jose Rodriguez, Jose Barrera, Jose Garcia, Jose Albornoz, Juan Heredia, Jose Vera, Lena Parvex, Lo Aguirre, Luis Rodriguez, Luis Cid, Mario Alvarado, Manuel Olmedo, Miguel Rodriguez, Mercedes Guzman, Mario Melo, Mario Moreno, Maximo Bermudez, Maximo Neira, Punta Arenas 3, Pedro Matta, Pedro Bravo, Rahue Salas, Raul Lagos, Ricardo Ruz, Ricardo Perez, Ronald Wood, S.J. San Juan de Dios Hospital, Susana Ovando, Salvador Cautivo, Susana Sanhueza, Sergio Tormen, Tocopilla II, Teobaldo Salazar, Transito Cabrera, Uruguayos, Valdivia, Vallejos Guillermo and Ximena George. Santiago Court of Appeals Judge Alejandro Solis Munoz was assigned the cases joined under case Rol 2182-98: Linique, Chihuio, Boris Weisfeiler, Coelemu, Villa Grimaldi, Linares and Parral.

Judge Jorge Luis Zepeda of the Santiago Court of Appeals was assigned the following cases: 14 ENDESA, Jose Toha, Antonio Llido Mengual, Lampa, Juan Maino Canales, Elecmetal, Joan Alsina, Coquimbo Minors, Coquimbo Remains, Vidal, Riquelme, Ibanez, Paulina Aguirre Tobar, Social Workers, National Stadium and David Silberman.

Judge Juan Guzman remains in charge of the cases Operation Colombo, Operation Condor, Operation Condor II, Caravan of Death and Calle Conferencia.

Maria Estela Elgarristia Alvarez, Judge of the San Miguel Court of Appeals, was designated to investigate cases of San Bernardo and Paine.
